What is Nippers?
Nippers is the term given to the junior lifesavers aged between 5 and 13 years. Nippers is an activity based program that is designed to educate young children about surf safety and awareness of the aquatic environment. Most Surf Life Saving Clubs offer a program of surf awareness, skills coaching and competition over various levels, similar (though modified) to the events Australian Surf Life Savers Participate in. While competition is an important element, surf awareness and education is the primary aim. Children are taught from the youngest ages how to respect, read and use the surf to their advantage. This is competed in an environment of fun and healthy lifestyle which is unique to Surf Life Saving.
2009/10 Nippers Program
David Cumming is delighted to be able to take on the role of Nipper’s coordinator following the retirement of Lisa Gates at the end of last season. As we gear up for what promises to be another exciting Nipper’s program, we would like to encourage as many parents as possible to get involved. You can do this by becoming an age manager, or assisting with water safety, beach activities, or a range of other tasks.
In order to get off to a smooth start and to ensure that we have enough caps and bathers for Nippers and to guarantee your child a spot in his or her age group, I would greatly appreciate it if you could enrol your child as soon as possible. Also by letting David know in advance if your child will require a cap or bathers we can ensure that we have enough supplies. Please contact David at cumminggang@bigpond.com. 2009/2010 membership fees are either $75 per person (adult/child) or $150 for a family membership.
As in previous years early registration will take place on November 2 at the clubhouse. Nippers will kick off on December 27,and will run through to New Years with only a one day break in the middle. The dates will then revert back to Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday. Times will be confirmed closer to the season. We look forward to seeing you on the beach.
